With General elections looming up next year, Xavier Duval’s Parti Mauricien Social Democrat ( PMSD) is jockeying for second place in an electoral alliance with a bigger partner, possibly the Labour Party of former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.

Overestimating his own strength , Duval decided to strike out on his own, using the Prosecution Commission bill to part ways with Premier Pravind Jugnauth’s MSM. The PMSD and its supporters then saw Duval as a prime minister waiting for his turn.
After all, out of the big four partiers, PMSD was the only party that had not got the primeministership. After the 2014 elections, Duval edged out Paul Berenger as Leader of the Opposition and it seemed that his time had come.
