Since several years, a Mauritian company has been growing a super rice, mainly for the export market.

According to “Defi Media”  the rice is grown by “Vita Rice Ltd” , mostly a crop rotation on sugar estates.
The company’s Marketing Manager, Herman Suhirman said this year’s production is estimated at 200 tons, sold in several supermarkets in the  USA and also  in France, at all “Monoprix” stores.
He said Mauritian consumers have clearly not understood that the “Vita Rice” is mostly arsenic free.
Suhirman explains that previously the rice was grown on paddy fields, where one Kg of rice consumed 5,000 kgs of water.
“That was unsustainable for the environment and exhausted the aquifers. It was also the main factor in the accumulation of arsenic.
